Glaziers

Glaziers fabricate, repair, install and service many types of commercial and residential glazing systems.

Glaziers also fabricate, service, repair and install several different types of doors such as all glass doors, revolving doors, mall sliders, automatic doors and several other types of aluminum framed doors complete with all of the related hardware and closers.

A large part of the trade involves the building envelope and the use of flashings, claddings, waterproof membranes and caulking of several varieties.

Glaziers assemble and install glass display cases, shower and tub enclosures and they install mirrors.

Good reading and math skills are essential to glaziers because they must be able to read and interpret blue prints, shop drawings, window and door schedules and various specifications.

Glaziers must be able to take this information and transfer it to the lay out of the work to be installed. Glaziers use specialty lay out instruments such as builders levels, theodolites and lasers.

Glaziers work with many types of power tools and highly specialized glazing tools.

Glaziers must be familiar with the safe use and set up of several types of scaffolding systems, suspended stages, self propelled elevated work platforms and ladders.

Glazing is a recognized trade in the Province of Manitoba and involves a four (4) year apprenticeship. At the end of the apprenticeship you can write the inter-provincial exam and receive a ticket that is recognized right across Canada.

The glazing trade requires a fair degree of strength and agility as there is plenty of heavy lifting, bending, twisting and climbing. Safe work habits are essential because of the risks involved in glazing.

The glazier may find him or her self at ground level one minute and several stories high the next. Glaziers also work with many toxic materials which require specialized training and knowledge.
